An on-grid solar system — also called a grid-tied or grid-connected system — is a rooftop solar setup that works alongside your existing MVVNL electricity connection. It has no battery. During the day, your solar panels power your home directly. Any electricity you don’t use flows back into the grid through a bi-directional net meter, and you get credited for it on your bill.
At night or on heavily overcast days, you simply draw power from the grid as usual, and those credits are adjusted against what you consume.

On-Grid Solar System Frequently Asked Questions
No — and this is by design, not a defect. Grid-tied inverters are legally required to shut down during an outage so that power isn’t exported into lines that DISCOM linemen may be working on. If you need power during outages, you need a hybrid system with battery backup, or you can keep your existing inverter running alongside the solar system.
Roughly 80–100 sq ft per kilowatt for a standard flat-roof installation. A 3 kW system needs about 250–300 sq ft of shade-free area. An elevated structure lets you keep using the roof space underneath.
A 3 kW system in Lucknow generates around 12–15 units per day, or 360–450 units per month. At current MVVNL residential tariffs, that’s roughly ₹2,800–₹3,600 off your monthly bill. Most homes with a 3 kW system see their bill fall to just the fixed charges.
